1. Melbourne Storm Last week: 1 Change: N/A
Another week, another sign the under-the-cap-Storm are the real deal. Outclassed the Broncos, albeit on their home turf. The 24 showdown with the Dragons may very decide who wins the minor premiership.
2. Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles Last week: 3 Change: UP 1
Not at their best against the Panthers, but got an ugly win based on defence. The Sea Eagles can take confidence from their performance without the ball against a team that had everything to play for.
3. St George Illawarra Last week: 2 Change: DOWN 1
The Canberra hoodoo remains intact, but the Dragons are still a hope of winning their third consecutive minor premiership. Were great in the first half against Canberra, but seemed to shut up shop after the break.
4. North Queensland Cowboys Last week: 5 Change: UP 1
Got another win without Thurston, albeit against the abysmal Titans. Neil Henry has done a great job with the Townsville outfit, but whether they can do damage in September remains to be seen.
5. Brisbane Broncos Last week: 4 Change: DOWN 1
Struggled against the Storm, which raises the suspicion they’ll dominate poor teams and do it tough against the competition’s elite.
6. New Zealand Warriors Last week: 6 Change: N/A
Nearly, nearly stole No. 5 off the Broncos after thrashing the Rabbitohs. Won’t get such an easy ride against motivated teams.
7. Wests Tigers Last week: 9 Change: UP 2
Did enough against the Roosters to win. Need to find consistency, because they have the talent to compete with anyone.
8. Newcastle Knights Last week: 11 Change: UP 3
Pulled out of a worrying tailspin by blanking the Sharks. Could be the win that sets up their rest of their surprising season.
9. Penrith Panthers Last week: 8 Change: DOWN 1
Their attack was treated with contempt by a pumped-up Manly outfit. The Panthers will look back on that loss as one that got away at season’s end.
10. Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs Last week: 14 Change: UP 4
Won a lottery against their archrivals Parramatta thanks to two field goals. Have to be better to make the finals.
11. Canberra Raiders Last week: 15 Change: UP 4
Why can they only seemingly beat the Dragons? If they were in the finals, Bennett and Co. would be sweating, big time.
12. Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks Last week: 7 Change: DOWN 5
No Gallen? No chance. Couldn’t get on the scoreboard against the Knights. Their brave charge to the postseason is over.
13. Sydney Roosters Last week: 13 Change: N/A
More disappointment against the Tigers. Start planning for next year.
14. Parramatta Eels Last week: 12 Change: DOWN 2
The unluckiest club in the comp. Became the first team to lose in golden point in consecutive weeks. To make things worse, those defeats came against archrivals Penrith and the Bulldogs.
15. South Sydney Rabbitohs Last week: 10 Change: DOWN 5
Absolute rabble against the Warriors. The horse has bolted on another season of disappointment.
16: Gold Coast Titans Last week: 16 Change: N/A
Bad football team.
